St. Croix to Host 30th Triathlon
The largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Croix, will host its 30th major triathlon on December 2, 2018.
This year’s race offers athletes a chance to win their trip to St. Croix with a “Fly, Stay, and Race for Free” sweepstakes taking place until July 31, 2018. The grand prize includes a three-night stay at The Buccaneer Resort, free entry into the race of choice for this year’s race and flight reimbursement for up to $1,000. Second place will receive free entry into the race of choice for this year’s race and third place will receive a triathlon t-shirt.
St. Croix has certainly made a name for itself in the triathlete world and has been home to previous races such as “America’s Paradise Triathlon”, “St. Croix International Triathlon” and “IRONMAN 70.3® St. Croix.” The beauty of the island is obvious through the entire race, from the swim in the Christiansted Harbor to the sweeping views along the South Shore. But the real highlight of the race is the world-famous 15% average grade climb on the bike known as “the Beast.”
The authentic experience athlete’s feel when they race in St. Croix is best described by 11-time IRONMAN® Champion, Lisa Bentley, who said “Racing in St. Croix is true triathlon. Every resident embraces the event. No exaggeration. I never saw a car on the bike course on race day. Racing in St. Croix embodies all that is good about triathlon. We raced hard. But the biggest takeaways were the relationships we built with the local families. Those priceless memories are lasting a lifetime.”
The Beauty & The Beast Triathlon is being run by VI TRI, a 501(c)(3) organization, composed of local leaders who founded and administered successful events, including the Coral Reef Swim Race (5 miles open water), Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series®, and Junior Tri Virgin Islands Kids Triathlon Series.
VI TRI is proud to partner with the USVI Department of Tourism, Virgin Islands Triathlon Federation, The National Park Service and the legendary Buccaneer Resort for this year’s races. A total of three races will be offered: Long Distance Course, Sprint and, for the first time, a Sprint Aquathlon. Relays will also be offered in the Long Distance Course and Sprint Triathlon races. Passports are not required for U.S. citizens, and racers can enjoy the convenience of multiple nonstop flights from major cities.
The committee aims to raise funds through the “race to rebuild” for the St. Croix Animal Welfare Center, My Brother’s Table and the Boys and Girls Club of St. Croix, all of whom were impacted by Hurricane Maria in September 2017.
Support from the St. Croix community will ensure the legendary race will continue to impress visitors as it has in the past. For more details on the race and a chance to win, visit www.virginislandstriathlon.com.
