The Triathlon Legend Continues on St. Croix

A day after the anniversary of Hurricane Maria, VI TRI, the group of organizers of the 2018 triathlon on St. Croix, held their first press conference at Fort Christianvaern, the site of the transition area for the December 2 race. Race Director, Theresa Harper, updated the community on the race happenings and the committee’s focus on giving back. Harper made a special mention to thank the US Virgin Island Department of Tourism, whose support and contribution allowed for the committee to move forward with their hope of holding another triathlon on the island. This year’s “race to rebuild” will benefit three nonprofits: My Brother’s Table, the St. Croix Animal Welfare Center and Caribbean Centers for the Boys & Girls of the Virgin Islands, all of whom lost everything after Hurricane Maria devastated the island in September, 2017.

VI TRI is dedicated to keeping the triathlon tradition alive on St. Croix; this year’s race marks the thirtieth major triathlon hosted on the island. The community has been overwhelmingly supportive of this year’s race through their sponsorships and look forward to showing athletes how far they’ve come in their rebuilding process after the storm.

Athletes will have an opportunity to experience the true spirit of the island during the Friday night “Tri Fete” in downtown Christiansted.  Local restaurants & retail shops will be open late, live music will be heard at several venues and special cultural tours will be offered. Athletes will also have the opportunity to see several surprise cultural performances or sail on the World Ocean School’s historic Roseway Schooner. Visitors can partake in the community support and give back during the festive evening through the can drive for My Brother’s Table. The St. Croix Animal Welfare Center will also be present during the event with a puppy parade along the Christiansted boardwalk.

With so many wonderful events taking place, the race weekend will not be one to miss. Three races will be offered this year: long-distance course, sprint and for the first time, a sprint aquathlon.  Relays are offered in the long-distance course and sprint triathlon races. In addition, the long-distance course race is designated as the Caribbean Long Distance Triathlon Championship. VI TRI is currently offering discounted race entry for all events taking place during the race weekend.

VI TRI, along with the United States Virgin Islands Department of Tourism and the National Park Service, look forward to another successful triathlon in America’s paradise.
